This Shiraz Touriga blend is the second vintage release of an exciting new addition to the Thomas Wines suite of red wines.
This new label is a contemporary expression of blending Shiraz with some newer and emerging varietals within the region, and provides an interesting contrast to our DJV Shiraz Pinot Noir which is our tribute to the traditional ‘Hunter River Burgundy’ blends of the past.

Winemaking Overview
-
In the Vineyard
From the relatively low cropping and very early 2024 vintage in the Hunter Valley.
The Shiraz component of this wine is from the old vine 'Shed Block' from the Pokolbin Estate Vineyard, which has unfortunately been all but bulldozed at the hands of developers shortly after the 2024 vintage.
Interesting, we chose exactly the same parcel of Shiraz for our 2024 DJV Shiraz Pinot Noir blend, which makes for a very interesting comparison as to the contibutions of the minor varieties in each blend.
Again this year, we sourced a small parcel of Touriga Nacional from our friends at Mount Pleasant. -
In the Winery
After a number of bench trials, we landed on 93% Shiraz and 7% Touriga for the Nova blend this year, which is almost double the percentage of the 2023 vintage.
The relatively small addition of Touriga to the bright and vibrant red/blue fruited Shiraz has quite a significant impact, providing a compelling dried floral and sour cherry complexity and a seductive tannin structure to the blend.13.8% ABV

"Excellent energy and lift, with depth from shiraz and fragrance from the inclusion of 7% touriga. Clean, gorgeous and perfumed, bursting with sour cherry, raspberry and cranberry notes, plus a faint spicy, floral lift and a shadow of savouriness that adds depth and balance. A bang-on, contemporary-style red and a fitting follow-up to last year's inaugural vintage"
Tasting Notes
-
Appearance & Aroma
The colour is a vivid mid purple with a ruby hue
A flamboyant nose of red petals, ruby chocolate, sweet spice and exotic sandalwood.
-
Palate & Finish
Medium in body yet with an intense core, showing a seductive texture from velvet-like ripe tannin.
Generous and long on the palate showing candied violets, fresh red currant, black berry and boysenberry fruit with hints of Valrhona chocolate, crushed dry herbs and hickory adding another dimension. A playful wine with a serious side.
WHEN TO DRINK
The Nova Shiraz Touriga is deliciously enjoyable during the freshness and vibrancy of its youth, but we suspect that some medium-term cellaring will also be rewarded.

The Vineyards
Whilst I have always applied a no compromise, attention to detail approach to my winemaking, I truly believe that 90% of the quality lies in the vineyard. The key to great wine is ‘keeping it simple’ to preserve that potential quality from the vine through to the bottle - Andrew Thomas
