Our Commitment to Sustainability at Thomas Wines

Our Commitment to Sustainability at Thomas Wines

At Thomas Wines, sustainability is not a marketing concept, it is a practical commitment to responsible stewardship of the Hunter Valley. Our approach recognises that producing wines of place requires caring for the land, water, and ecosystems that make those wines possible. As a small, quality-focused producer, we believe that protecting the health of our vineyards and surrounding environment is fundamental to the long-term future of both our winery and the region.

We are currently working towards formal certification through Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, with a goal of achieving certification in 2026. This program provides a nationally recognised framework that ensures wineries operate in a way that is environmentally responsible, economically viable and socially accountable. As part of this process, we have developed and implemented several structured management programs that guide how we care for our vineyards, winery operations and local environment.

These include our Biodiversity Management Program, Biosecurity Management Plan, Sustainability Action Plan, and Water Management Plan. Together, these frameworks help ensure that our environmental practices are measured, monitored and continuously improved over time.

Many of the sustainability initiatives we are implementing are already embedded in our day-to-day vineyard and winery operations. One key example is our approach to organic waste. 100% of grape marc (the skins, seeds and stems remaining after pressing) is composted and returned to the vineyard. This helps improve soil health, increases organic matter and reduces the need for external inputs.

We also use wood chip mulching for undervine cover, which supports soil moisture retention, improves soil structure and helps reduce erosion. These practices contribute to healthier vineyard ecosystems and more resilient soils over time.

Water conservation is another important focus. We utilise treated dam water for tasks such as winery floor cleaning, helping reduce unnecessary use of potable water. Recently, we also installed a UV water filtration system, which improves water quality while reducing waste associated with traditional treatment methods.

Beyond these individual practices, our sustainability philosophy centres on continuous improvement. By formalising our programs and working towards Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certification, we are ensuring that our environmental stewardship is measurable, transparent and aligned with industry best practice.

Ultimately, sustainability at Thomas Wines is about safeguarding the future of the Hunter Valley, ensuring that its historic vineyards, distinctive soils and world-class expressions of Semillon and Shiraz can continue to thrive for generations to come.
