2020 Two of a Kind Shiraz
Our ‘Two of a Kind’ wines are a tribute to the multi regional blends that created some of Australia’s best wines in the 50’s and 60’s. The wines are based on the Hunter Valley’s signature varieties of Semillon and Shiraz, and blended with the varieties that are well suited to other South Australian regions providing an interesting twist and extra dimension to these unique wine styles.
The 2020 Hunter Valley vintage was shaping up to be the fourth warm dry/drought season in a row but was unfortunately compromised due to the bush fires that crept towards our region. We only picked the vineyards and blocks that showed zero or negligible impact from the smoke, which heartbreakingly resulted in a 60% reduction in our production. This vintage of Two of a Kind Shiraz actually contains some fruit that would normally go to our flagship Kiss Shiraz. This regional blend is made up of equal quantities of Hunter Valley Shiraz (50%) and McLaren Vale Shiraz (50%). The two components are fermented separately but then blended soon after pressing and matured in premium quality French oak 300L Hogsheads for 16 months prior to bottling.
A vibrant and intriguing expression of Shiraz, this wine offers a classy perfume of dark cherry and choc-licorice set to a subtle scent of cedary oak. It’s medium to full, with plush dark fruit flavours and given some structure from coils of firm, dusty tannin.
The result is a seamless, seductive, and dangerously drinkable style. This wine has the attributes to cellar well over the next five to eight years, yet its fruit intensity and supple tannin structure make it enjoyable in its youth, particularly with food.
