2020 'Like a Version' Braemore Semillon
Hunter Valley Semillon is one of the worlds most uniquely regional wine styles. The 51-year-old Braemore vineyard (planted 1969) is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, and consistently produces Semillon featuring freshness, vibrancy, and remarkable longevity. This wine is not like that at all.....
It's the same, but different.
Introducing the second release of Thomas Wines “Like a Version” Braemore Semillon.
Yes, I’ve ‘borrowed’ the concept from the Triple J’s Friday morning segment, but here the idea was to present the ‘original’ and a ‘cover version’ from one of the Hunter Valley’s most iconic Semillon vineyards.
In 2019, I invited our visiting vintage winemaker Georgie Jacobs to have some fun with a small parcel of Braemore Semillon. The brief was simple - make a completely different style of wine to mine with the same grapes.
The last parcel to be picked from the Braemore vineyard on the 3rd February. No SO2, no finings, and only partially settled juice. The cloudy juice was run into two older french oak Hogshead (330L) barrels. One barrel inoculated, the other left to ferment with indigenous (wild) yeasts. Left to rest on yeast lees until racked from barrel with a minuscule SO2 addition just prior to hand bottling in December 2020 without fining or filtration.
724 bottles produced.
Mid yellow in colour with a natural light cloudiness. An unusual aromatic combination of marmalade like citrus fruit, chamomile tea, nuts and a gentle sulphide complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly creamy texture and a soft acidity. Flavours of lemongrass, baked apple and a hint of bitter almond.
This wine has not been fined or filtered and has a natural deposit. For the full-blown 'natural' wine experience, roll the bottle to re-suspend the solids before serving, otherwise decanting is recommended.
Whilst still completely different to our classic style of Braemore Semillon, I find this vintage of "Like a Version" a little less “confronting” than the inaugural 2019 vintage. Both vintages are the antithesis of pure and precise 'classic' Hunter Valley Semillon, and that's exactly the point... It's the CONCEPT and the stylistic difference that I enjoy the most about this wine, and I know there are many, many people out there who will dig this wine much more than I do…
