2017 Belford Shiraz
This fruit for this new single vineyard Shiraz is from the Ridgeview property owned by Darren and Tracey Scott, part of the Sweetwater Ridge development in the Belford area of the lower Hunter Valley. The vineyard backs onto the property from which we source the fruit for the ‘Sweetwater’ Shiraz label, and not surprisingly has similar reddish loam soil over limestone and is spotted with ironstone throughout.
Whilst the two vineyards were planted at a similar time (circa 1998) and are very close in proximity, the wines have some very distinctive differences in terms of their fruit character and structure, the Belford being marginally fuller and sitting in a slightly darker fruit spectrum than the perfumed red fruited ‘Sweetwater’ Shiraz.
Hand picked on the 10th of February, the fermentation was worked solidly for a duration of seven days, before being pressed off for maturation in a combination of new, one and two year old premium Frenck oak (330L) Hogsheads for 15 months. Bottled in July 2018 and rested for 10 months in bottle prior to release on 4th May 2019.
Only 139 dozen bottled, this wine is exclusive to our Wine Club members.

From what is widely regarded as an outstanding Hunter Valley vintage, the 2017 Belford Shiraz displays a vivid purple-crimson hue. The nose is particularly lifted and aromatic with fragrant red fruit and cherries, leading to a long intense palate in the savoury, darker fruit spectrum. Precise tannin and oak integration underpin a wine that clearly has some early drinking appeal, but will be destined for greatness with some time in the cellar.
