Our Stunning New Label Scores 95 from Halliday Wine Companion!
We're thrilled to share that the 2023 Nova Shiraz Touriga, a recent debut released in May, is already receiving high praise.
A New Direction for Thomas Wines
Nova breaks fresh ground for us, pairing tradition with exploration. Crafted from a single-vineyard Shiraz parcel planted in 1989 on Mistletoe Estate property on Hermitage Road, with just 4% Touriga Nacional, this is not your usual Hunter Valley Shiraz blend. Touriga Nacional, a Portuguese varietal, brings nuance - stone fruits, spice, and floral layers - to our classic Shiraz canvas.
This isn’t a token splash of Touriga - it's a carefully curated expression of terroir and experimentation. Nova makes a bold statement: Hunter Valley Shiraz has room to evolve, and we’re leading the charge.
The Reviews
95 Points from Toni Paterson, Halliday Wine Companion
A very generous review indeed:
"This shiraz touriga blend, with its deep colour and meaty rusticity, is a new addition to the range. Despite making up only 4% of the blend, touriga's influence is unmistakable. Iron filings, oyster shells, meat jus and peonies dance over supple red plum and bright raspberry fruit. The tannins are soft and the mouthfeel is plush. The wine opens beautifully with air, so decanting is highly recommended."
95 Points from Nick Ryan, The Weekend Australian
Wine luminary Nick Ryan didn’t hold back:
“Dried red fruits, cranberry, cherry, boysenberry and even blood orange. Juicy, fragrant and humming with lively acidity… lurks the grasping fingers of something dark and broody: 4% Touriga… the ever‑so‑slight, yet unmistakable, grip of gritty Iberian tannin.” The Australian

- Vibrant red and black fruits - boysenberry, sour cherry, damson plum.
- Savoury undertones of licorice, bay leaf, cedar.
- Elegant florals on the nose, think violets, purple blooms.
- Medium‑bodied with lively acidity and polished tannins.
- A wine that’s approachable now but will reward proper cellaring.
