2019 Braemore/LAV Six Pack
2019 "Like a Version" Semillon (3 bottles)
Hunter Valley Semillon is one of the worlds most uniquely regional wine styles. The 51-year-old Braemore vineyard (planted 1969) is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, and consistently produces Semillon featuring freshness, vibrancy, and remarkable longevity. This wine is not like that at all.....
It's the same, but different.
Introducing the inaugural release of Thomas Wines “Like a Version” Braemore Semillon.
Yes, I’ve ‘borrowed’ the concept from the Triple J’s Friday morning segment, but here the idea was to present the ‘original’ and a ‘cover version’ from one of the Hunter Valley’s most iconic Semillon vineyards.
In 2019, I invited Tassie winemaker and all-round top bloke Joe Holyman to come up and have some fun with a small parcel of Braemore Semillon. The brief was simple - make a completely different style of wine to mine with the same grapes. Those of you who know Joe will appreciate his sense of mischief and no-nonsense approach to winemaking.
The fruit was foot trodden and left overnight before pressing the next day.
No SO2, no finings, no settling the juice. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts on full solids. No temperature control. The ferment was finished bone dry in just two days. Racked only twice over the next 8 months. A minuscule SO2 addition just prior to hand bottling in December 2019 without fining or filtration.
1296 bottles produced.
Whilst I personally find the wine a little “confronting”, that’s not the point. It’s the CONCEPT and the difference that I love, and I know there are many, many people out there who will dig this wine much more than I do…
Mid yellow in colour with a natural light cloudiness. An unusual aromatic combination of marmalade like citrus fruit, chamomile tea, nuts and a pungent solids induced sulphide complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly creamy texture and a soft acidity. Flavours of lemongrass, baked apple and a hint of bitter almond.
The antithesis of pure and precise 'classic' Hunter Valley Semillon, but that's exactly the point...
This wine has not been fined or filtered and has a natural deposit. For the full-blown 'natural' wine experience, roll the bottle to re-suspend the solids before serving, otherwise decanting is recommended.

2019 Braemore Semillon (3 bottles)
Hunter Valley Semillon is one of the worlds most uniquely regional wine styles. The 50 year old Braemore vineyard (planted 1969) is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, and consistently produces Semillon featuring freshness, vibrancy and remarkable longevity. This wine has achieved an enviable reputation in recent years as being one of the finest examples of classic Hunter Valley Semillon.
The 2019 growing season opened with reasonable spring rainfall, setting the vineyards with abundant subsoil moisture. This was followed by one of the hottest, driest ripening periods for many years. The vineyard was hand picked during the last week of January, and first week of February; whole bunch pressed to minimise phenolics and fermented with a neutral yeast to enhance the varietal purity. The wine spent five weeks resting on its yeast lees prior to bottling in May. Stylistically, the 2019 Braemore is more classically shaped and lower in alcohol than the last two warm dry vintages, however its concentration of fruit provides excellent current drinking as well as being a belter for the cellar. The 2019 vintage is the 20th consecutive bottling of Braemore Semillon under the Thomas Wines label.
From one of the Hunter Valley’s most celebrated Semillon vineyards, this wine displays an amazing iridescent green hue. The nose is greeted with intense lime zest fruit characters which follow through to the palate with succulent, vibrant fruit purity. The mouth-watering acidity provides impeccable balance and precision ensuring the wine can be enjoyed as a youngster, or cellared for 5 – 15+ years.
