Winemaker's Comments

Hunter Valley Semillon is one of the worlds most uniquely regional wine styles. The 51 year old Braemore vineyard (planted 1969) is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, and consistently produces Semillon featuring freshness, vibrancy and remarkable longevity. This wine has achieved an enviable reputation in recent years as being one of the finest examples of classic Hunter Valley Semillon.

The Hunter Valley experienced the fourth consecutive year of drought conditions during the 2020 growing season. To add insult to injury, then came the unprecedented fire season to the west and southwest of the region. Whilst no vineyards were directly impacted by fire, the resultant smoke did impact some vineyards within the region. Fortunately, due to its location/proximity (far enough away from the Brokenback range), the Braemore Vineyard came through unscathed with regard to smoke issues.

The parcel selected for this bottling was hand-picked on the 23rd of February, and then whole bunch pressed to minimise phenolics and fermented with a neutral yeast to enhance the varietal purity. At the completion of the fermentation, the wine spent five weeks resting on its yeast lees prior to preparing for bottling in June. Stylistically, the 2020 Braemore is more classically shaped and lower in alcohol than the last three warm dry vintages, however its concentration of fruit provides excellent current drinking as well as being a belter for the cellar. The 2020 vintage is the 21st consecutive bottling of Braemore Semillon under the Thomas Wines label.

Tasting Notes

From one of the Hunter Valley’s most celebrated Semillon vineyards, this wine displays an amazing iridescent green hue. The nose is greeted with intense lime zest fruit characters which follow through to the palate with succulent, vibrant fruit purity. The mouth-watering acidity provides impeccable balance and precision ensuring the wine can be enjoyed as a youngster, or cellared for 5 – 15+ years.
