2018 Dam Block Shiraz
Winemaker's Comments
This wine comes from a tiny 0.8 hectare block just across the dam from our flagship Kiss Shiraz. It shows similar dark blue fruits as well as the distinctive savoury texture and al-dente tannins of this pedigree vineyard, but at a slightly more affordable price.
We have been taking this fruit for some years now. It has always been an important component of the Two of a Kind and Synergy Shiraz, with a few barrels making the grade for Elenay over the last few vintages. The inaugural 2015 release proved very popular with our customers, and it has since become a permanent instalment within our single vineyard range.
2018 is widely considered an exceptional Hunter Valley vintage and has produced outstanding Shiraz. Most are enjoyable in their youth and the best will be regarded as classics in years to come. The grapes were hand picked on the 9th of February 2018, cold soaked for 48 hours and then fermented on skins for about seven days. The wine was then matured for 15 months exclusively in premium French oak hogsheads of which approximately 25% were new barrels. After bottling, the wine was rested in the cellar for ten months prior to being initially released 2nd May 2020.
We held back 60 dozen in our climate-controlled cellars for re-release October 2022
Tasting Notes
Another modern expression of Hunter Shiraz displaying a medium/deep crimson hue. Typically medium bodied in weight, but showing quite vibrant, aromatic red and blue primary fruit. The palate with its jube like sweet fruit seems quite 'plush' considering it's weight, and the impeccably balanced French oak and savoury tannins extending the length and breadth of the wine. If you can't get your hands on a bottle of Kiss, this wine will certainly give you a warm-hearted cuddle.... Drink 2022 – 2035+
