2013 Braemore semillon wins James Hallidays’ Semillon of the Year

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Regarded as one of the wine industry’s ‘night of nights’, the James Halliday Wine Awards were held in Melbourne tonight. It’s a celebration of the very best wines reviewed over the last twelve months, just prior to highly anticipated launch of his 2015 Australian Wine Companion.

We are very pleased to announce that our 2013 Braemore Semillon continues its stellar performance over the last 12 months, receiving 97 points and the title of James Hallidays ‘Semillon of the Year’. Unfortunately this wine sold out a few months ago, but the good news is we have kept aside about 250 dozen for a Cellar Reserve release in 2019.

It is a fantastic recognition of this great vineyard site, and augers well for the success of the currently available 2014 vintage ($30/bottle).

2008 C.R. Braemore due for release next week

I love this time of year….

It’s the time of year when I have both my current vintage and Cellar Reserve Braemore Semillon available for tasting side by side. It’s the best way to demonstrate what an amazingly unique wine style we produce here in the Hunter Valley, and consolidates it’s place amongst the very best whites in the world of fine wine.

Holding back a quantity of each vintage of Braemore Semillon is certainly a significant financial commitment, particularly for a relatively small producer. The truth of the matter is that I understand the majority of wine drinkers don’t cellar wine any more, and as a winemaker that specialises in the signature varieties of our region I feel I have a ‘moral obligation’ to do the cellaring myself. That way, everybody gets the opportunity to see this amazing transformation that occurs over six relatively short years…

Whether you prefer the freshness, vibrancy and varietal purity of Hunter semillon in its youth, or the toasty, lemon curd and lanolin complexities it develops with age, it doesn’t matter. They are both awesome expressions of something that is so unique to our region.

The 2008 Cellar Reserve Braemore Semillon is set for release next Saturday 2nd August, $50/bottle

Get in quickly. This stuff sells out fast…..

The 2013 reds are all now safely in bottle

Today sees the last of our 2013 reds go to bottle, with Kiss shiraz going down the line this afternoon. I’m extremely pleased with how all of these wines have shaped up during their time in oak over the last 15 months, and am looking forward to their release next May (2015).

The DJV shiraz was actually bottled in January, as this (intentionally) lighter bodied ‘Hunter River Burgundy’ style is matured in older oak and doesn’t need (nor benefit from) the extended barrel maturation like the more contemporary Hunter styles. Every year we learn ore about how to perfect this wine, particularly with regard to the semillon verjuice co-fermentation, and I think this is the best vintage we have produced to date.

Unfortunately there will be no 2013 Motel Block (again…), but Sweetwater, Elenay (yes, we’ve made another one) and Kiss shiraz are all looking outstanding, similar in style to the 2010 vintage.

Due to the extremely ‘challenging’ red vintage in 2012 we will not be releasing any Hunter shiraz from that year, and the 2011 vintage (particularly Kiss shiraz) stocks are getting quite low, so make sure you stock up before they sell out.
